ARTIST: LARK CALDERON-GOMEZ
Lark Calderon-Gomez was born and raised in California, where she fell in love with oil painting when she was young. She spent time working in animation with the talented crew at Academy Award winning MetroLight Studios, (Total Recall), in LA, under Academy Award winning digital effects artist, Mark A. Lasoff, (Titanic, Interview with a Vampire, to name a few). At that time he was involved in setting up and managing a 2D division called MetroCel, where Lark worked as a painter. She illustrated a book in 1990 published by Person/Simmel Press, and designed tattoo’s upon request. She grew tired of working for others artistic projects and decided to quit and focus on her own work but found she couldn’t paint for many years after. When she finally returned it was out of necessity; with “Tree Spirit.” She was faced with an emotional crossroads. Living in LA was becoming too difficult. The place was scarred and suffering from the 1992 riots. It became a hostile and dangerous environment living in Korea Town. She left in 1994 for a peaceful mountain existence in Northern California. She eventually became focused again on painting and simplifying her life.
This was when she met talented Mill Valley based painter, Phyllis Shafer. Lark studied for four years with her. It was in this environment where she really flourished, developing and refining her current, Pop-Surrealist Style of painting and writing backstories, many inspired by her Grandmother’s immigration from Guatemala in the 1940’s, for most of her works.
